AUBURN – Federal agents in Chicago on Tuesday arrested a fugitive listed as one of Maine’s most wanted criminals.
Larry Richard Cox, 42, was arrested in connection with an Auburn heist and numerous warrants charging him with burglaries and probation violations.
He was arrested after agents from the Lewiston-based Central Maine Violent Crimes task force chased him into Portsmouth, N.H. Monday night. The agents had received information that Cox was on his way to Boston to hop a train bound for Illinois.
The agents were unable to catch Cox on Monday but they forwarded information to the U.S. Marshal’s Service in Chicago. The marshals captured Cox shortly after he stepped off a bus in that city Tuesday morning. An investigator said the suspect was bound for Springfield, Ill.
Locally, Cox had been wanted in connection with a heist at Gipper’s Sports Grill during which money bags were stolen from an office.
Auburn police said a Gipper’s security camera captured an image of Cox as he stole the money bags last September. Warrants were issued but police were unable to find the suspect, described by police as a career criminal.
In December, police posted information about Cox on the Maine Most Wanted Web site, a service provided by the Maine Community Policing Institute and the Brunswick Police Department.
Currently, 45 fugitives are listed on the Web site. Six are from Lewiston, three from Auburn.
The most infamous posting belongs to James “Whitey” Bulger, an organized crime figure from Boston indicted on 18 counts of murder and tied to another 21 deaths.
Cox, believed to be living in the Portland or Westbrook area at the time of his arrest, remained in federal custody Tuesday night.
