LEWISTON – Two weeks after a suspect opened fire in a downtown apartment house, police arrested an Auburn man in connection with the incident.
Brett J. Griffin, 36, of 6 Stevens Mills Trailer Park, was charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.
Nobody was hurt in the Aug. 5 shooting at 66 Shawmut St., but police said several people were inside the building when the shots were fired.
It was believed a .22-caliber gun was used to fire at the knob on an apartment door. Police said the door was unlocked. Several more shots were fired in the hallway outside the apartment before the shooter fled, police said.
The apartment where the shots were fired is at the corner of Shawmut and Pine streets. When police first arrived, they approached the building from all sides with weapons drawn. Other officers searched between buildings on nearby streets, but no suspects were located.
Police interviewed several people from the building and developed several leads. On Tuesday, detectives Brian O’Malley and James Theiss obtained a warrant to search Griffin’s Auburn home.
Investigators from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, U.S. Treasury Department’s Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms and Auburn police assisted with the search, in which at least two guns were found. One of the guns was believed to be the weapon used in the downtown shooting.
At the time of the shooting, at least one child was inside the building, which led to the charge of endangering the welfare of a child filed against Griffin, police said.
Investigators did not comment on a possible motive for the shooting, although it was believed Griffin knew some of the people in the apartment building.
He was being held on $500 cash bail Wednesday night at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn.
