WATERFORD – Camp To Belong began in 1995, founder Lynn Price said Thursday. The nonprofit organization seeks to reunite siblings separated through foster care. Today, camps are operated in California, Colorado and Maine. Camps are soon expected to open in Canada, Massachusetts, Nevada and Oregon, Price said.

The Camp To Belong summer camp program is in its 10th year and has reunited more than 1,000 sibling since its first year, Price said. Camp staff members are all volunteers, and the camps are supported through fund-raising efforts, grants, donations and sponsorships.

The numbers (obtained from the Camp To Belong Web site):

• There are more than 600,000 children in foster care across the United States.

• 65 percent to 85 percent of children entering the foster care system have at least one sibling.

• 30 percent of children in foster care have four siblings or more.

• 75 percent of siblings end up apart when they enter foster care.
