NORWAY – Bruce Hobart will give a solo performance Saturday, Aug. 21, offering a variety of original compositions steeped in traditional American music as well as interpretations of everything from bluegrass tunes to contemporary favorites on acoustic guitar, mandolin, fiddle and harmonica.
In his early days, Hobart performed with the Danville Junction Boys and various other groups. For the past seven years, he formed a duo with his daughter, April Hobart, who joined him on guitar, banjo and washboard.
They entertained at pubs, coffeehouses, college campuses, church basements, campgrounds and special events throughout New England.
They have released their first CD, “The Hobohemians,” featuring 20 original songs written and performed by both of them. It’s a “collection of songs that feel as comfortable as a wood fire on a chilly Maine night,” according to Bates College’s WRBC’s “Folk Beat” program
Now Bruce is a solo act, hitting the road again and ready to play music that draws on the string band and folk traditions. He likes to get the crowd involved with an occasional audience participation tune or fast dance song. For more information, people visit www.hobohemians.com.
The concert will begin at 7 p.m. at the Fare Share Commons, 447 Main St. Opening for Hobart will be Mary Ukelady on electric concert ukulele.
Seating is limited. Spring water and refreshments will be available for a small donation. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Commons, a not-for-profit group providing a health food co-operative and access for community involvement. Admission: $8 at the door; $4 for children and seniors.
