FARMINGTON – Maine Elks Association Youth Activities Director Robert Bernier of Farmington has announced that the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Antlers program will soon be under way in lodges across the state. The program is an Elks youth activity program to provide youngsters between the ages of 12 and 20 with an opportunity to learn about the principles of Americanism, respect for parents and love of home, as well as to aid others through charitable and community service.

The program originated in the 1930s, but has been recently re-vitalized to encourage youngsters to join an organization that works to quicken the spirit of American patriotism, that builds character and teaches respect for the conviction of others on the matter of worship and religion.

Each Antler’s lodge will operate on its own, but will be supervised by its sponsoring Elks Lodge. The Antlers will elect their own officers, and members will work to develop their own programs and activities that support charities as well as community service projects.

To qualify for membership, youngsters must be between the ages of 12 and 21, a United States citizen, be of good character, and believe in the existence of God. In addition, their Antler’s lodge must be sponsored by a current Elks Lodge. Currently, the Farmington Elks Lodge 2430 will be the first lodge in Maine to offer this program.
