LEWISTON – George Calvin Hamlin, 79, of Rumford, died Thursday, Aug. 19, at Montello Manor Nursing Home.

Born in Waterford, March 18, 1925, the son of Carl S. and Mina Jansson Hamlin, he graduated high school in 1943, Bridgton Academy in 1947, and the University of Maine at Orono in 1951, with a degree in civil engineering.

He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for the Maine Department of Transportation from 1952, until his retirement in 1989.

He was a member of the Mexico Congregational Church, the Rumford Square Dance Club and the Rumford Horse Shoe Club. He enjoyed photography, woodworking, tennis, golf and traveling. He was a hunter and a fisherman. He married Marcia Stearns on Sept. 12, 1953, and they enjoyed over 50 years together.

He is survived by is his wife, of Rumford; three children, Paula Prevost, of Bolton, Mass., Susan Hamlin, of Lovell and Mark Hamlin, of Peru; two grandsons, Stephen Mead and David Mead, both of Lovell; and a sister, Nancy Coccia, of Port St. Lucia, Fla.
