BERWICK (AP) – The National Weather Service issued a rare tornado warning Friday afternoon for parts of York County. But there were no reports of damage. There was a report of weather spotter seeing a funnel cloud near the Sanford Airport, said Tom Hawley of the weather service office in Gray. Radar indicated a tornado between Lebanon and Berwick, he said.
Four airplanes were hastily put into a hangar for protection when a funnel cloud was spotted to the northwest, Sanford Air owner Don Martel said. The funnel cloud disintegrated without touching ground, he said. Parts of Kennebunk lost power for nearly an hour, while lightning set off fire alarms at a school and an assisted care facility. A Kennebunk woman was taken to the hospital after being shocked while talking on her home phone, Kennebunk fire officials said. Maine averages one or two tornadoes a year, Hawley said, which are usually weak funnel clouds.
