NEW YORK – Esteban Loaiza is pitching his way out of the New York Yankees’ rotation.
Jose Guillen and Jeff DaVanon homered off the newest target of booing fans at Yankee Stadium, and Loaiza failed to make it out of the fourth inning Saturday in the Angels’ storm-interrupted 6-1 win over New York.
Anaheim, which has won four straight and 12 of 16, goes for a three-game sweep Sunday, the finale of a six-game trip. The Angels, just behind the pace in the AL West and the wild-card race, held New York to just one run in the first two games of the series.
New York, playing its worst ball since early April, has lost five of its last six and been outscored 33-8 in the defeats. Its AL East lead over second-place Boston is down to 61/2 games, the Yankees’ smallest margin since July 11.
Twins 8, Indians 1
MINNEAPOLIS – Justin Morneau and Torii Hunter hit consecutive homers, and Terry Mulholland pitched six strong innings to lead the Minnesota Twins over the Cleveland Indians 8-1.
Cleveland, which pulled within a game of the first-place Twins last Saturday, dropped six back in the AL Central following its sixth straight loss. Mulholland (4-6) allowed just one run and seven hits, striking out four and walking two. Cristian Guzman drove in three runs for the Twins, and Corey Koskie led off the eighth with his 20th homer.
Blue Jays 10, Orioles 4
BALTIMORE – Carlos Delgado homered and drove in three runs to key a 15-hit outburst, and the Toronto Blue Jays handed the Baltimore Orioles their fifth straight loss, 10-4.
Rookie Dave Bush (2-3) allowed three runs in six innings for the Blue Jays, who have their first winning streak under interim manager John Gibbons, now 4-8 since taking over for Carlos Tosca.
Athletics 5, Devil Rays 0
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Barry Zito scattered four hits over eight shutout innings, leading the AL West-leading Oakland Athletics past the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 5-0.
Bobby Crosby, Marco Scutaro and Mark Kotsay homered for Oakland, which has won five straight. The Athletics have hit 14 homers – including seven solo shots the last two days – over the past four games.
Rangers 5, Royals 3
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Mark Teixeira hit his 30th homer, Manny Alexander added a two-run double and the Texas Rangers won their eighth straight game with a 5-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals.
The Rangers matched their longest winning streak of the season and remained tied with Boston for the AL wild-card.
