CHICAGO (AP) – They’ve been looking for a pass rushing defensive end since Richard Dent’s playing days ended a decade ago and now the Chicago Bears think they have found their man.
But at a steep price.
Chicago acquired Adewale Ogunleye from the Miami Dolphins on Saturday, giving him a lucrative six-year, $33.4 million deal that included a $15 million signing bonus after he couldn’t reach a deal with the Dolphins.
And they traded away their best pass receiver – and arguably best playmaker – of the last five years in Marty Booker, who grabbed 100 passes in 2001 when they won their division and 97 the next year when he made the Pro Bowl. Chicago also sent Miami a third-round draft choice in 2005.
“To get valued players you have to be willing to give value,” Bears general manager Jerry Angelo said.
“These rarely take place. It’s very hard to trade. We’re not like basketball and/or baseball. Trading in our league is very difficult,” Angelo added.
“But both clubs were motivated.”
Ogunleye’s acquisition is the latest attempt by the Bears to upgrade their defensive front. They used their first two draft picks on tackles, Oklahoma’s Tommy Harris and Washington’s Tank Johnson.
Ogunleye had 15 sacks last season for the Dolphins to lead the AFC and make the Pro Bowl. Meanwhile, the Bears totaled 18. Considering that new coach Lovie Smith was a defensive coordinator at St. Louis, another performance like that was not going to be acceptable.
“Our defense is about four-man pressure and now we feel like we have a bell cow’ at defensive end,” Smith said after the Bears beat the San Francisco 49ers 20-13 Saturday night, making him 2-0.
Their defensive ends were going to be Alex Brown, who’s been slowed by a calf injury during the preseason, and Michael Haynes, a first-round pick last year from Penn State.
Now there will be even more competition for playing time.
“He’s a proven pass rusher, but he has to come in and fight like everybody else,” Haynes said of Ogunleye. “I don’t take the trade personally. I love competition.”
Ogunleye had been in a contract stalemate with the Dolphins since May.
He’s expected to join the Bears on Monday.
“We just had the opportunity to get a proven pass rusher and we felt that we had to pursue that and get that done,” Angelo said.
With two preseason games remaining, how long will it take for the 27-year-old Ogunleye to get in shape?
“I’m sure he’s going to come in as good as shape as you can come in, given the fact he hasn’t been in pads,” Angelo said. “Is he in game-day shape? No. How long that will take will be determined by him obviously.”
Without Booker – whose 315 catches were fifth most in team history in just five seasons – the Bears will look to second-year wideouts Bobby Wade and Justin Gage along with former first-round draft pick David Terrell to make up the difference. They also drafted speedy receiver Bernard Berrian out of Fresno State in the third round.
Terrell has done more talking than performing in his three seasons with just 86 catches and eight touchdowns. He was given a clean slate when Smith replaced Dick Jauron as coach.
“I have been ready. I was ready since I came in here,” Terrell said. “I just didn’t have the people who believed in me.”
