LEWISTON – While Sunday was projected as a day for cuts, it also marked the end of a very short era.

Early in the morning, Lewiston Maineiacs coach and general manager Clem Jodoin announced that Brandon Verge, the only goaltender still on the roster from last season, was traded to division rival Chicoutimi for a fifth-round draft pick in the 2005 QMJHL entry draft.

The move means that none of the three goaltenders that saw playing time last season are left on the roster. Maxime Joyal was traded to Quebec, another division rival, earlier in the week, and Matt Davis, who has since signed on in Halifax, was asked not to return to camp as a 20-year-old.

Verge, meanwhile, was expected to challenge Jaroslav Halak and Jonathan Bernier for the top spot at camp.

The players from last year’s team had mixed reactions, ranging from regret to acceptance.

“He was a good friend, a good teammate,” said forward Mathieu Aubin. “The fact that he has a place where he will play, though, that is good for him.”

He’s a great guy, friend and teammate,” added forward Ryan Murphy. “It’s sad to see him go, but it was a move that was good for the team and for him. now he will get a shot to play more often.”

Verge leaving was just the start of the roster moves Jodoin and his staff made Sunday.

After the team’s second exhibition game against Drummondville, Jodoin announced four cuts.

Those not returning to action after Sunday are Marc-Andre Perron, Marc-Andre Crete, Francois Lebeau and Jonathan Remillard.

More cuts will be made following a team meeting Monday at 10 a.m.
