JAY – A 23-year-old woman told police she fell asleep Monday morning while driving and her minivan left Route 4 and hit the “Welcome to Wilton” sign.
Melissa Couture of Jay and her two young children were not injured Monday after her van left the road, officer Troy Young said. Couture went home and called police to report the accident, he said.
Young estimated Couture’s Dodge Caravan received $3,500 in damage, including the windshield, fender and driver’s side door.
The corner of the “Welcome to Wilton” sign broke off, he said, and the Blueberry Festival sign was knocked down.
In a separate accident Sunday, Young said, a woman hit a guardrail after she reported she lost control after avoiding hitting a deer.
Beth Gulliver, 41, of Jay, was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital after she swerved to avoid hitting a deer and hit a guardrail head-on on Woodman Hill Road. She complained of pain in her neck and had difficulty breathing, he said.
