OTISFIELD – The East Otisfield Free Baptist Church will have its annual Professor Joe Holden celebration at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 29.
Holden had a theory that “the earth is flat and stationary and that the sun and moon do move.” This can be read on the side of the Italian Marble tombstone that marks the grave of the professor. He donated a small sum of money to the East Otisfield Free Baptist Church, specifying that only the “interest could be used at the annual Sunday school picnic.”
Another donation to the church by William Spurr stated, “Only the interest can be used to buy strawberry ice cream, peanuts and popcorn for the annual Sunday school picnic.”
This year there will be a picnic after the morning service at 11 a.m. with free strawberry ice cream, peanuts, popcorn, and a beverage. Those attending can bring a bag lunch. There will be fun and fellowship for all as everyone joins in an old-time Sunday school picnic outside, weather permitting; inside if rainy.
All are welcome to go to the church, located on the Rayville Road. For more information, call the minister, the Rev. Gertrude DeCoteau, at 743-2438.
