ST. ALBANS, Vt. (AP) -The 17-year-old driver of an all-terrain vehicle that hit a bridge in Sheldon last month was legally drunk the night he and a friend died in the collision, according to authorities.

Ryan Forty’s blood-alcohol content was close to twice the legal limit of .08 when he and Brandon Rainville, 18, both of Franklin, died after attempting to elude Vermont State Police Sgt. Kirk Cooper.

Forty and Rainville hit a guardrail before they were thrown over the bridge, police said. Forty’s father discovered the bodies the next afternoon.

Police, the state’s attorney’s office and the Liquor Control Department have launched an investigation into who supplied Forty with alcohol the day he and Rainville died. That person or those people face a felony charge carrying up to five years in prison and $10,000 in fines.
