CORVALLIS, Ore. – Mike Powers allowed one hit in eight innings to lead Nova Seafood of Portland to a 2-0 victory Tuesday over Kennewick, Wash., to capture the American Legion World Series. Powers, who fanned seven, walked one and hit a batter, allowed one runner to reach third base. Sam Sainz had the only hit for Kennewick – a single with two outs in the fifth inning. Powers struck out the final four batters he faced. Nova got on the scoreboard in the second inning, when Ryan Reid led of with a double to left. After a sacrifice and an infield single, Reid scored on a fielder’s choice. The game remained 1-0 until the seventh when Chris Burleson reached on an infield single with two outs. Burleson stole second and scored on Ryan Flaherty’s double to left.
Kennewick greeted Nova reliever Reid with a pair of singles to open the ninth inning, putting the tying run on base. Portland’s pitching ace escaped the jam by striking out the next three hitters.
Reid, Flaherty and Andrew Dvilinsky had two hits apiece.
