LEWISTON – Laura R. Dow, 94, died early Friday, Aug. 27, at Montello Manor Nursing Home following a short illness.

She was born Nov. 19, 1909, in Lewiston, the daughter of Thomas Burnham and Ada Charlotte (Troop) Libby. She was educated in the the schools of Lewiston, and graduated from Jordan High School. After high school, she earned her teaching certificate from the Dingley School in Lewiston.

On April 25, 1931, she married Earle R. Dow Sr. in Gorham. He died in 1968.

Mrs. Dow was employed as a teacher for 42 years, having served early in her career as an educator in one-room school houses in Leeds, Greene and Turner, She later taught at the Walton and Central schools in Auburn for many years, before retiring in 1973. Mrs. Dow was a gifted teacher and had a great affection for her students. Her students, who shared the same affection for Mrs. Dow, for many years, always took her out to dinner for her birthday.

She was a member of the United Baptist Church of Lewiston, the Maine Retired Teachers Association, and was a local Girl Scout leader for a number of years.

She enjoyed raising African violets, keeping a fish tank, traveling, and shopping for the latest clothing styles, as she dressed impeccably.

She was a loyal letter correspondent with family and friends throughout her life; and very much looked forward to, and enjoyed, entertaining her family and many friends in her home.

Survivors include one granddaughter, Laurie A. Brown of Westbrook; two great-grandsons, Jarred N. Brown and Jason E. Brown of Westbrook; a nephew, Randy Wilkins and his wife, Shirley, of Florida; and many friends and former colleagues.

She was predeceased by a son, E. Raymond Dow Jr., in 1984; a sister, Verdie Wilkins; and a brother, James M. Randall.
