LEWISTON – Firefighters spent two hours Saturday putting out a permitted fire that accidentally spread out of control.

Fire crews from Lewiston and Lisbon responded to 6 Clayton Drive at 1:30 p.m. after a local couple reported that they were clearing brush for a housing development, and the fire spread to a larger pile of debris.

According to Capt. Roger Beaudoin of the Lewiston Fire Department, the couple had a burning permit to clear the brush.

“But it got out of hand,” he said.

The woman who owned the house lot suffered minor burns on her arm when she tried to pull brush away from the fire. She refused medical treatment, Beaudoin said.

The Lewiston Fire Department called Lisbon for assistance because a structure fire was reported at the same time as the brush fire. The report of the structure fire ended up being false.

Firefighters were at the Clayton Drive scene until 3:30 p.m.
