TORONTO – With the New York Yankees’ starting rotation struggling, the team’s offense matched its high-scoring game of the season.
Tony Clark homered three times for the first time in his career, Ruben Sierra hit a grand slam for his 300th homer, and Gary Sheffield and Alex Rodriguez also connected to lead the Yankees over the Toronto Blue Jays 18-6 Sunday.
New York, which overcame a 4-0 deficit for the second time in the series, had nine runs and 10 hits in the ninth inning, both season highs. But Sheffield hobbled off the field, appearing to hurt his left leg while landing on third base.
Mariano Rivera, who had entered in the eighth with the score 9-6, finished with what must rank as among the biggest leads of his career, getting his 45th save in 48 chances.
Twins 7, Angels 1
ANAHEIM, Calif. – Johan Santana won his eighth straight decision, Jacque Jones and Augie Ojeda homered and the Minnesota Twins ended the Anaheim Angels’ nine-game winning streak, 7-1 Saturday.
Santana (15-6) allowed one run and four hits in seven innings and struck out six, raising his league-leading total to 213.
He is 8-0 with a 1.68 ERA in nine starts since the All-Star break and has won 13 of his last 15 decisions.
Cardinals 6, Pirates 4
PITTSBURGH – Reggie Sanders hit a three-run homer and the St. Louis Cardinals matched last year’s total with their 85th win, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4 Saturday.
Jim Edmonds hit fifth homer in as many games for St. Louis, a major league-best 85-44. The Cardinals improved to 11-5 this year against the Pirates.
Sanders hit his 20th homer of the season in the second inning after Scott Rolen’s leadoff walk and Edmonds’ single.
Dodgers 4, Mets 2
NEW YORK – Adrian Beltre went 5-for-5 with his major league-leading 42nd home run, and the Los Angeles Dodgers got a pair of big pinch hits Saturday in a 4-2 victory over the New York Mets.
Eric Gagne worked a perfect ninth for his 36th save in 38 chances and first since Aug. 15 at Wrigley Field. His 143rd save since 2002 broke Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley’s major league record for most in a three-year span. Eckersley had 142 from 1990-92 with Oakland.
Braves 9, Giants 3
ATLANTA – Paul Byrd allowed one run in six innings and hit a pair of run-scoring singles off Jason Schmidt, leading the Atlanta Braves past the San Francisco Giants 9-3 Saturday.
Rafael Furcal had four hits and four RBIs for the Braves, who have won six straight. They moved a season-high 22 games over .500 and improved to 15-1-3 in their past 19 series.
Padres 5, Expos 2
MONTREAL – Jake Peavy won his sixth straight decision, and Phil Nevin homered and drove in three runs in the San Diego Padres’ 5-2 victory over the Montreal Expos on Saturday night.
Peavy (11-3), unbeaten in nine starts since the All-Star break, held Montreal to five hits and two runs in 6 2-3 innings. It was the 18th time in 20 starts he’s allowed two earned runs or less.
Trevor Hoffman struck out the side in the ninth for his 33rd save in 37 chances.
Marlins 4, Rockies 3
MIAMI – Juan Encarnacion hit a two-run single in the first inning and a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth, leading the Marlins over Colorado 4-3 Saturday night and extending the Rockies’ losing streak to six.
With Colorado leading 3-2 in the eighth, Jeff Conine singled off Steve Reed (3-4) leading off and Encarnacion followed with his 14th homer.
Phillies 4, Brewers 3
PHILADELPHIA – Placido Polanco homered off Mike Adams with one out in the ninth inning, giving the Philadelphia Phillies a 4-3 win Saturday night that extended the Milwaukee Brewers’ losing streak to 10.
Polanco hit his 12th homer of the season on a 0-2 pitch by Adams (2-2), capping a rally from a 3-0 deficit.
Athletics 5, Devil Rays 4
OAKLAND, Calif. – Eric Chavez homered for the third straight game and Tim Hudson won his third consecutive start, leading the Oakland Athletics over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 5-4 on Saturday night.
The A’s sixth straight victory extended their AL West lead to two games over Anaheim after the Angels lost 7-1 at home to Minnesota.
Eric Byrnes added a two-run homer for Oakland, which overcame three errors a day after rallying from a four-run deficit to win 8-7.
Rangers 4, Orioles 3
ARLINGTON, Texas – Rod Barajas homered and drove in the tiebreaking run with a sacrifice fly, and the Texas Rangers extended the Baltimore Orioles’ season-high losing streak to 12 games with a 4-3 victory Saturday night.
David Dellucci also homered for the Rangers, who have won 12 of their last 15 to remain in the AL West and wild-card races.
With the game tied at 3 in the seventh, Texas loaded the bases against B.J. Ryan (3-5) when Laynce Nix walked, Kevin Mench singled, and Gary Matthews Jr. was walked intentionally.
Mariners sweep
SEATTLE – Randy Winn hit a two-run homer in the 12th inning to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 5-3 victory Saturday night, completing a doubleheader sweep of the Kansas City Royals.
Ichiro Suzuki led off the 12th with an infield single – his 50th hit in August, which gave him three months this season with at least 50 hits. Winn followed with his game-winning shot off Matt Kinney (0-1).
Cha Seung Baek (1-0), who was called up from Triple-A Tacoma between games, pitched two shutout innings for his first win.
It was the third straight game the Royals blew an early lead against the Mariners. Seattle won the opener 9-7 after falling behind 4-0.
