AUBURN – Plans for a full road paving program later this summer will be delayed, according to city engineers.

The city will try to add three or four paving projects to the current list and put out a longer list of roads to bid next spring.

“Each year, it’s a little different,” said Paul Niehoff, city pavement management technician. “Some years, it seems like we’re doing a lot of projects. This year might not seem like a lot, but we’ll make it up next spring.”

The city will include pavement work on Jackson Hill Road, Garfield Road and part of Summit Street in the current $970,000 paving contract, which crews began last summer, Niehoff said.

“We’re just trying to get the roads done this year that we think really need to get done,” he said.

Those projects involve removing old asphalt and replacing it with new layers.

Technical Engineer Jim DePalma is completing his last batch of more involved road reconstruction projects, he said. Those involve removing roads to the base, reshaping them and putting in new drainage before repaving.

Crews should be wrapping up work in the Vickery Road neighborhood in three weeks. Work on Pride Road and neighboring streets starts this week and should be done later this fall.

“That’s it for me,” DePalma said. “I’ve spent my budget.”

Niehoff blamed delays this year on the weather. Paving crews can’t work in the rain. Since a handful of paving contractors bid on projects throughout central Maine, delays on a state road project in Portland throw off the schedule everywhere else.
