If our local officials and state legislators are so worried about the Palesky bill passing in November, why not, instead of using scare tactics threatening a decrease in local services, go after the tax dodgers.
The state of Maine is losing millions of dollars a year in excise and sales taxes to New Hampshire. These tax dodgers in York and Oxford counties have found the best of both tax havens, by simply keeping a foot in both states.
New Hampshire has no sales tax and a very low excise tax. By simply renting a post office box or using a relative’s or friend’s address in New Hampshire, they save themselves thousands of dollars. They simply pay Maine property taxes, which by the way are lower than property taxes in New Hampshire.
By simply enforcing state laws, Maine could inherit extra revenue. I wonder if our present and past governors are aware of this long overdue solution.
