WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) – A 16-year-old girl whose disappearance Saturday night sparked a statewide alert was found unharmed Sunday morning, police said.
Heidi O’Brien disappeared with her child’s father, David Bottom, 24, who had battered open the door of her family’s home with a hatchet.
She was found at around 8 a.m. Sunday at a city apartment, said Sgt. William Chanis. Police interviewed her and were still seeking Bottom.
O’Brien was with Bottom when she was last seen around 11:50 p.m. Bottom was armed with a hatchet, and police said they feared O’Brien was “in extreme danger.”
Bottom is the father of a 4-month-old child with O’Brien.
He allegedly used the hatchet to smash the window, then break down the door, of O’Brien’s home, police said.
The warning was the fourth Amber Alert called in Massachusetts in the past month, and some experts have warned that overuse of the system will desensitize the public to the alerts.
But Worcester police on Sunday defended their use of the Amber Alert. Capt. Robert Freeman said there was evidence of a violent confrontation, so they took no chances.
“You have the best results up until three or four hours after the incident,” Freeman said of search efforts. “It’s one of those on-the-moment decisions an officer has to make, and we stand by it.”
Bottom was out on bail from an assault and battery charge related to an alleged assault on the girl, WCVB-TV reported.
Bottom was described as wearing a dark shirt down to his knees and blue jeans, and as having brown hair and eyes with a tattoo of “Heidi Jean” on his neck. He was last seen near Great Brook Valley Housing Project in Worcester.
