HAMPTON FALLS, N.H. (AP) – A sudden storm that downed trees injuring 10 people at a campground earlier this month has a name.

Meteorologists said Wakeda Campground was hit by a bow echo.

The National Weather Service says a bow echo is a narrow band of wind up to about a quarter-mile wide. It earned its name because of the shape it takes on a radar screen.

Meteorologist Eric Chwibs says winds in such storms have reached 80 to 100 mph.

The one that hit the campground had winds that started at about 40 mph and increased as they reached the Seacoast. Injured campers were pinned or impaled by falling trees, and one man was trapped after a tree landed on his trailer.
