FARMINGTON – The Farmington planning office received a proposal to change the zoning for a plot of land on Wilson Stream on Monday.
The Daku family has been farming the land, which lies along 250 feet on either side of Wilson Stream next to Mount Blue Shopping Center, since the 1980s.
The planning office received an application from W.S. Development Associates LLC of Massachusetts on Monday to change the lot’s zoning classification. Currently zoned for agriculture and forestry, the developer proposes it be changed to a general development zone allowing them to build a shopping center on Routes 2 and 4 at the Knowlton Corner Road site.
Though there has been much speculation as to the identity of the large anchor store that would dominate the site, no retailer has committed to opening there, said Steve Kaiser, the town’s code enforcement officer.
A preliminary site review won’t even start until next month, he said, adding that the potential development is only in the planning stages. He believes that if another large retailer plans to come to the area, the Dakus’ land would be a good place for it, keeping the sprawl limited to the southern end of town. In terms of road safety, there is already a traffic light there for Wal-Mart that could be used for traffic control to the center, he pointed out.
Kaiser also expects a “quality proposal” from a “top-notch” firm that wants to work as much as possible with the existing landscape rather than flatten the whole thing out to put in another monolith.
Selectmen will be taking up the proposal at their next meeting Sept. 19 and will most likely hold a public hearing at a future date.
