LEWISTON – The wife of robbery suspect Dennis Austin was indicted Tuesday on charges that she helped her husband elude police.
Tracy Matthew, 23, of 114 Bartlett St., was indicted by the Androscoggin County grand jury on a charge of hindering apprehension. She is the wife of the 35-year-old Austin, who was arrested over the weekend and charged in connection with a robbery on Stevens Street last week.
Investigators said Austin sneaked into the home Aug. 25 and then threatened an elderly couple with a handgun. Police said Austin made off with more than $2,000 worth of jewelry after the couple fled their home.
Austin was indicted Tuesday on two counts of robbery and a charge of burglary. The same grand jury indicted Matthews on charges that she helped harbor or conceal her husband, knowing the police were looking for him.
Austin and Matthew were caught Sunday, when police and federal agents tracked the pair to Brunswick. Each remained at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn on Tuesday.
