There has been another strike at the County Jail, this being the third time within a short space of time when the prisoners have refused to work, claiming that there was money due them from Contractor Horne. Mr. Horn came down from Portland and held a conference with the County Commissioners. The prisoners claimed that Mr. Horn had promised to pay them if they complied with certain conditions and then had not fulfilled his agreement. They stopped work again, leaving things in the shop just as they were. They claimed that no money had been paid them for three weeks. They did not go back to work. Mr. Horn came to Auburn but did not effect a settlement until after the regular time for going to work. However, the men went back to their places later.

Brochu said several feet of the chimney was put up by a mason and this permitted use of the boiler again. Grain and silage had to be fed to the hogs since a new State law specifically prohibits feeding uncooked garbage to swine.

Norway – There has been a serious need for additional seating at the pulling ring at the Oxford County fairgrounds for may years. This year it has been answered by the construction of 174 feet of new bleachers along one side of the ring. William Haynes, president of the Oxford County Fair Association, says the bleachers is only the beginning of what may lead to additional space and perhaps to a covered pulling ring in the future.
