AUBURN – Central Maine Community College will offer “Fundamentals of Educating Students with Special Needs” (EDU185) from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays from Sept. 7 through Dec. 21.

The three-credit course has been approved by the Maine Department of Education for credit toward teacher certification and recertification.

“Fundamentals of Educating Students with Special Needs” surveys a variety of special needs issues, including condition syndromes, common limitations, mitigation strategies, adaptive equipment and frequently suggested accommodations.

The course examines the fundamentals of working with students identified as having special needs and includes an overview of applicable laws and regulations.

The course will be taught by Laura Rifkin, college disabilities coordinator and learning consultant.

Rifkin has 25 years of experience in working with students with disabilities and has worked at Hebron Academy and Leavitt Area High School as well as public schools in Boston. She holds a bachelor of science degree from Lesley College in Massachusetts and a master’s in education from the University of Southern Maine.
