AUBURN – The first meeting of the Woman’s Literary Union for the year will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, at the clubhouse, 19 Elm St. Dorothy Darling Gatchell will speak on “Love and Laughter.” Gatchell is a retired schoolteacher and is well known in the Lewiston-Auburn area. The Executive Board will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, at the clubhouse.

ATV class

GRAY – A free ATV safety class for all ages will be sponsored by the Gray Region Citizen Corps at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, in Stimson Hall, Gray village. The class will be taught by Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife instructor Lou Haskell.

Volunteers of the nonprofit, charitable Gray Region Citizen Corps provide monthly safety and preparedness education seminars to residents from Yarmouth to Casco.

Togus Frolic

LISBON – VFW Post 9459 and Auxiliary will attend the the annual Togus Fall Frolic on Saturday, Sept. 11. Members will meet at the post home, Route 196, at 7 a.m. to leave for Togus. It is also Patriots Day and flags will be flown at half-staff. Those wanting more information can call 353-5291 after 4 p.m.

BOWDOIN – The Bowdoin Historical Society will meet on Sunday, Sept. 12, at the Bowdoin Community Building on Route 125. A potluck supper will be served at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting will start at 6. Al Gagne of Bowdoin will give the program on his experiences at the Fernald State School in Massachusetts. His story and others were written about in the recent book, “The State Boys Rebellion,” by Michael D’Antonio. The public is invited.

Widow fellowship

LISBON FALLS – The Lisbon Area Widow Fellowship will meet on Monday, Sept. 13, at the Lisbon United Methodist Church, School Street. Members will meet at 11:30 a.m. followed by a noon potluck lunch. All interested widows in the area are invited.

Story hour

LISBON – The Lisbon Library Department will present the Chewonki Foundation’s pre-school program, “Fur, Feathers and Feet,” during storytime from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, in the Lisbon Falls Children’s Room. This program is made possible through a donation from Downeast Energy.

Preschoolers, ages 3, 4, and 5, may attend this program and receive a hands-on opportunity to explore the world of plants and animals up close.

Seating is limited at this “kickoff” storytime event, so preregistration is required. For more information or to reserve a spot in the audience, call the library at 353-6564 or 353-2262.

Rebekah lodge

AUBURN – Fidelity Rebekah Lodge 4 will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, at the Odd Fellows Hall, corner of Elm and Academy streets. Degrees and second nominations will be on the agenda. A supper will be served at 6:30.

Driving course

LEWISTON – A Maine Driving Dynamics course is scheduled at Lewiston High School from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Sept. 14 and 16. Participants will register at the first class. Instructor will be Fred Thompson. Those completing the course will receive a three-point credit on their driving record. Call 626-3840 for more information.
