HARRISON – The final weekend of the Deertrees Theatre Festival features a “no-holds-barred love story.” It’s the 1980 Pulitzer Prize-winner for drama, “Talley’s Folly” by Lanford Wilson, which will be performed Sept. 3, 4 and 5.
Wilson wrote “Talley’s Folly” as part of a trilogy that he never expected to write. Set in 1977, the “Fifth of July” shows the Talley family as they struggle with the Vietnam War.
When the actress who played Sally was having difficulty understanding her character, Wilson wrote “Talley’s Folly” as a way to help her realize the past history of Sally. Two years later he added “Talley and Son.” “Talley and Son” takes place July 4, 1944, and portrays the crises of illness, business and family problems of the Talleys. In addition, two of the sons are off fighting in World War II, and they must all deal with the repercussions of war.
“Talley’s Folly” is set on July 4th in the same year, but takes a slightly different perspective of the family – the romance between Sally Talley and Matt Friedman.
It’s a year after Matt met Sally on a vacation in Lebanon, Mo., and he has come back to try and win Sally’s hand. Sally is a bit cautious, but Matt refuses to accept her resistance and gradually overcomes it.
The Deertrees’ cast includes Jeff LaMarre as Matt and Terri Eoff as Sally. The director is Terrence Walsh.
The shows on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 3 and 4, start at 8 p.m. The Sunday, Sept. 5, show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Cool Moose in Bridgton, Fare Share Co-Op in Norway, Books & Things in Bethel and at the box office.
