JAY – Ryan Bourassa and Ryan Dipompo each scored early touchdowns as Jay overpowered Buckfield/Dirigo 53-0 Friday night.
The Tigers built a 27-0 lead at halftime and relied on their solid defense to hold the Cougars at bay.
Jay capitalized on nearly every opportunity and a TD pass by quarterback Justin Wells on fourth down in the third quarter put a nail in the coffin of the season-opening Class C Campbell Conference game.
“We just tried to get some balance out there,” Jay coach Mark Bonnevie said. “We ran the ball and we passed it some. I thought that we did a good job. We had players playing in different positions after four people went out with injuries in the first quarter.”
On the initial Jay possession, Bourassa (59 yards) ran up the middle, broke several potential tacklers and sprinted for a 50-yard TD.
Mike Nemi kicked his first of three extra points.
B/D received a boost when Nate Conley recovered a fumble, but the Jay defense forced a punt.
Dipompo ran it back 45 yards untouched down the right side.
“A positive is we out hit them,” B/D coach Al Cayer said. “The kids never gave up throughout the game. We just got beat by a better team, Jay was more skilled and it showed.” B/D (0-1) was limited because the Tigers front completely shut down the run.
The Cougars were held to eight yards on the ground. QB Jamie Henderson (7-for-15, 76 yards, one interception) connected with Spencer Berry, who caught four passes, including a 27-yarder in the second quarter.
“Our defense came up big,” Bonnevie said. “That was a big key for us.”
Wells (6-11, 115 yards, 2 TDs), scored on a keeper and threw an 11- yard strike to Andrew Deering. The Tigers’ Joel Ouellette ran in a 40-yard TD interception.
The Cougars drove inside the red zone in the second quarter, as Henderson found success running the ball, but the drive stalled.
“It’s a hard loss,” Cayer said. “But, the kids and coaches will learn from this. We are young, started two freshmen and we are missing two, two-way starters.”
