FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) – The New England Patriots released nine players on Friday and signed two, including quarterback Jim Miller, who was released earlier this week.

Miller, a 10-year veteran, was signed on July 19 after spending the 2003 season out of football. He was the starter for the Chicago Bears in 2001 and 2002, and for his career has completed 610 of 1,046 passes for 6,387 yards and 36 touchdowns. He has also played for Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, Atlanta and the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe.Miller was unable to throw during the preseason as he recovered from off-season shoulder surgery. The team also signed rookie running back Kory Chapman, an undrafted free agent from Jacksonville State who was originally signed by the Baltimore Ravens.

The team released running back Mike Cloud, safety Scott Farley, linebackers Lawrence Flugence and Grant Steen, tight end Joel Jacobs, defensive lineman Dwight Johnson, quarterback Kliff Kingsbury, cornerback Earthwind Moreland, and guard Jamil Soriano.

Cloud, a Boston College product, rushed for 93 yards on 19 carries in the Patriots 31-0 exhibition loss to Jacksonville on Thursday.

The team now has 65 players on its active roster, including NFL Europe extensions, and must cut down to the NFL regular season limit of 53 players by 4 p.m. on Sunday.
