Auburn is on the verge of receiving a wonderful gift. We have worked hard for it, and the opportunity to take it is at hand. We have qualified for state funding for an elementary school; the state Department of Education will fund 84 percent ($8.1 million) and local funding will be only 16 percent ($1.5 million).

Most of the elementary schools in Auburn have been upgraded to provide adequate facilities for our children. After years of discussion, compromise and sacrifice, we are at a point where, as a community, we need to support this project. If we do not, we will lose out; the state funding will go back to the state, and the citizens of Auburn will have to pay the entire bill for the necessary school facilities, in whatever form they may take.

The successful completion of this project will be a positive step for Auburn. Our commitment to education teaches children how to live in, value and give back to their community. Schools with appropriate space and enrollment mean that school staff know the children and those important connections help keep children safe and out of trouble. A commitment to quality educational facilities means higher property values because those areas are attractive places to live.

Residents should accept this gift to Auburn and show that we care about our community and our future. Show that the values of family and community are alive. I strongly support this promising project.
