BANGOR (AP) – John Edwards is scheduled to visit Bangor on Wednesday, speaking at a rally that will highlight issues in northern Maine.

The Democratic vice-presidential candidate will be making his first campaign visit to Maine. Its timing, less than a week after the end of the Republican convention in New York City, demonstrates Maine’s importance as a battleground in the November election, Gov. John Baldacci said.

“I think his message is going to resonate very well, especially in the Second District,” said Baldacci, who planned to attend the rally.

Edwards isn’t the only big-name campaigner coming to Maine this week. First lady Laura Bush is scheduled to campaign on her husband’s behalf Friday in Lewiston.
