BOSTON (AP) – U.S. Coast Guard searchers found the body of one of the two missing fishermen on Sunday, about two days after their boat went down between Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.
A Coast Guard helicopter found the body of Wayne Ingham, 54, of Fairhaven, at about 10 a.m. Sunday, according to Petty Officer Andrew Shinn. Michael Leonardo, 45, also of Fairhaven, was still missing.
“With every passing hour, the search area gets larger,” Shinn said. “More time means more possible travel.”
The Coast Guard had searched for the men since a sport fishing boat reported seeing a column of white smoke from their commercial fishing vessel, the Nancy Christine, on Friday evening.
The Nancy Christine sank in about 40 feet of water in the Muskeget Channel, the strait between the two islands. Ingham’s body was found about a mile south of Martha’s Vineyard.
The Coast Guard had originally thought that there might have been a third person on the Nancy Christine, but determined on Saturday that only Leonardo and Ingham were aboard.
The search was hampered because of eight-to-12-foot waves from Hurricane Frances and winds gusting at 20 to 25 miles per hour.
“It’s getting more difficult,” Shinn said. “These are the echoes of Hurricane Frances.”
