CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. – Senior defender Kevin Colwell converted a pass from senior midfielder Zach Rossignol at the 15-minute mark and sophomore goaltender Chris Willard made the goal stand up with a four-save performance as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Union College Dutchmen, 1-0, in men’s soccer Sunday.
Union, which fell to 1-1, enjoyed an 18-4 overall shot advantage, including a 4-2 shot on goal edge.
Field hockey
Providence 3, Maine 2
ORONO – Amy Phillips scored her second goal of the game from Melissa McGow 14 minutes into overtime to lift Providence over Maine, 3-2, in field hockey action Sunday afternoon.
Phillips opened the scoring for Providence when she beat Maine goaltender Jamie Morin off a penalty corner. Maine tied the game five minutes later when Amie Dubois notched her first goal of the year off a pass from Joanna Fernandes. McGow then put Providence up 2-1 as she scored off a corner.
Maine scored the lone goal of the second half when Rachael Hilgar beat the Friar keeper to tie the score at two. Phillips netted the game-winner in OT, giving Providence its first win of the year. Maine falls to 2-2 with the loss.
SUNY-Oneonta 3, USM 1
CANTON, N.Y. – Junior Kerry Birnstill scored her second goal of the weekend and sophomore Katie O’Brien scored the eventual game winner with 1:17 to play in the first half as the SUNY-Oneonta Red Dragons completed a sweep of the opposition in Field Hockey Fest 04 with a 3-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Sunday afternoon.
Birnstill converted from senior Sarah Johnson who earned her third assist of the two-game series, just 2:07 into play to get the Dragons off to a fast start, but Southern Maine sophomore goalie Sadie Garnache-Poirier prevented further scoring until O’Brien scored her first of the year as the first half wound down.
Women’s soccer
USM, SUNY-Fredonia tie
GORHAM – The University of Southern Maine Huskies and the SUNY-Fredonia Blue Devils played to a scoreless overtime draw while the Western New England College Golden Bears got an overtime goal from junior Erinne Goodwin to pick up a 2-1, come-from-behind victory over the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Eagles in the second day of play at the Southern Maine Invitational.
