BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) – Kathleen Currier, a three-sport athlete and honor student who graduated from Essex High School in June, was found dead in her dorm room at McGill University in Montreal early Saturday.

There was no sign of foul play or violence in the room, said university spokeswoman Jennifer Robinson.

“It’s a terrible tragedy,” Robinson said.

Currier’s family became concerned when she did not return to Vermont as expected Friday evening for the Labor Day break, Robinson said. Classes started Wednesday at McGill.

Robinson said the family made several requests during the night for the university to check Currier’s dorm room and that the McGill security force checked three times. During the first check, about 8:30 p.m. Friday, no one answered the door. After a later request from the family, security opened the door to the room, but nobody entered. Nothing appeared amiss from the entrance, she said.

A third request to check the room resulted in a search and the discovery of Currier’s body. Police, a doctor and medical emergency personnel were then summoned.

Montreal Police said they hope an autopsy will provide a cause of death for the 19-year-old Currier, who played varsity field hockey, ice hockey and lacrosse.
