WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Howard P Birmingham, 89, of Patten, died Sept. 1, from a long illness at Sweetbrook Care Centers where he resided for a few months.

He was born on Oct. 6, 1914, in Patten, the son of Bertram and Mabel (Robinson) Birmingham. He and his wife Mary (Julie) had moved from Millinockett, almost one year ago to North Adams, Mass., where he resided prior to entering the nursing home.

He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II. His battles and campaigns were located in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and Ardennes. His military occupation was a truck driver and he also attended a military school for an electrician.

He was a past commander of the VFW Post 04154. He graduated from Patten Academy in the class of 1934. He lived and worked as a barber for several years in Maine, prior to moving to Massachusetts, where he lived and worked barbering for several years. After him and his wife retired they relocated to Millinockett.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary (Dunphy) Birmingham; two daughters, Kim (Birmingham) Wright of Adams, Mass., Doreen Fuller, of Vinegrove, Ky.; one son, Kerry Birmingham, of Jay; stepson, Daniel Dunphy, of Stewartville, Minn.; one sister, Vida Newton, of Fontana, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
