RUMFORD – With more kindergartners than expected turning out during SAD 43’s first day of school last Wednesday, Superintendent Jim Hodgkin said the board will decide Tuesday whether to act to help relieve the larger class sizes.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the library of Mountain Valley High School.

About 115 young students are enrolled in six kindergarten classes in the district’s three elementary schools. Last year’s figure was just under 100. Hodgkin said the board will look at several options, ranging from doing nothing, to creating two additional educational technician’s positions.

The board may also act on a resolution that opposes the so-called Palesky tax cap proposal.

“I want them to take as strong a position as possible because of the devastation it could cause SAD 43,” he said.

Hodgkin said he plans to attend an informational meeting Thursday about the tax cap proposal at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. He is asking board members to attend. Voters statewide will decide the issue during the Nov. 2 general election.

Each of the school’s principals will present the results of the latest Maine Educational Assessment tests. Hodgkin said scores remained fairly flat, with a slight increase among 11th-grade students in a couple of subjects.

Several teaching and educational technician positions will be filled, along with that of the newly created position of director of the River Valley Community Learning Center.
