GRAFTON NOTCH – Dozens of rescuers spent five hours Monday carrying a Rumford woman with a twisted ankle off the Table Rock trail.

Park Ranger Jon Metcalf said the 19-year-old hurt her ankle about 2 p.m. while hiking with her aunt and several young children. They were about a mile up the trail, toward its peak.

“It’s very steep, probably the steepest terrain in Grafton Notch State Park,” Metcalf said.

Officials were alerted at 3:30 p.m. People from the state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Bethel Rescue, Outward Bound and several other agencies responded, hiking in and carrying her back out at 8:45 p.m.

Metcalf said she was taken by ambulance to be examined.

“It’s been a long day; we’re tired,” he said.
