WILTON – Selectmen set a limit on the amount of brush that can be taken to the town’s landfill Tuesday. The decision came after a large amount was brought in, and there was no policy in place to prevent it.

Town Manger Peter Nielsen told officials that a businessman brought seven logging trucks full of brush to the landfill after clearing a resident’s lot.

In the recent past, officials limited the amount of demolition debris that could be brought to the transfer station to one truckload per day. The limit was put in place because a resident brought several loads of debris after a house fire. Nielsen said he wondered if the same type of limit should apply to brush.

Summer resident George Schultz of Kansas told officials he brings about four pickup truckloads of brush twice a summer. “How often does it happen is a question you need to ask yourself,” Schultz told officials.

Selectmen decided that any vehicle larger than a one-ton truck is limited to one load per day.

In other business, officials gave interim Police Chief Ed Leahy the go-ahead to look for more part-time police officers. Leahy said many of his part-timers are currently unable to work because of injuries and other obligations.

Officials authorized Leahy and Nielsen to look into options for a new police cruiser as well. A cruiser was recently damaged when an individual took it from the police station and ran it over several obstacles.

Nielsen said it would cost $6,300 to repair the cruiser, which has 93,000 miles on it. The town’s insurance company paid $5,300, subtracting the $1,000 deductible. Voters approved $10,000 at the last town meeting toward a new cruiser. Nielsen said a new Impala would cost about $19,000, a new Ford about $21,000.

Leahy and Nielsen will research options and make a recommendation to selectmen at their next meeting. Options include holding a special town meeting to seek surplus-account funds for a new vehicle, or determining whether the police budget contains enough money.
