A two pound cusk was caught in the river yesterday morning, the fishermen being Lawrence Pierce of Miller street, Auburn, and Roy Davenport of Boston who is visiting here. The fish was caught near the falls and made a lively fight. This is the first cusk, it is understood which has been caught in this vicinity for many years.
A.I. Scribner who recently purchased the Woodside place on East Avenue picked from his garden Wednesday a cantaloupe which measured from tip to tip fourteen inches. It was ripe and had a fine flavor.

50 Years Ago, 1954
Miss Annie E. Woodbury of Danville Corner, one of Auburn’s most respected teachers, will soon begin another term as teacher at the Danville Junction School, the only remaining one-roomer in Lewiston-Auburn. She has spent many years at the school, teaching youngsters in the Danville Junction area the ABC’s of education. Miss Woodbury, on some occasions, has had to make the trip from her home to the school, slightly less than one mile, on snowshoes when the drifting snows made roads impassable.

Gov. Joseph Brennan was the guest speaker at the Androscoggin County Democratic Field Day held Sunday in Lewiston. He declined to endorse a Democratic presidential candidate and pointed his finger at energy as the state’s chief nemesis which must be overcome this winter. The annual field day was held before a sparse crowd on the grounds surrounding Le Montagnard Chalet, which sits on a hill overlooking No Name Pond. Standing on top of a truck strewn with items soon to auctioned off, the governor told county Democrats that the key issue facing state legislators is energy.
