LEWISTON – Nelson Fouquette, 81, of 100 Campus Ave., a lifelong resident of Lewiston, died Thursday, Sept. 9, at St. Mary’s Hospital. He passed away peacefully with his family by his side from complications of pneumonia.

He was born on May 6, 1923, the son Arthur and Antoinette (Belleville) Fouquette. He went to local schools graduating from Lewiston High School. He took much pride in the fact that he was the only child out of 16 in his family to graduate from high school.

On Sept. 15, 1945, he married Rolande Breton at Holy Cross Church in Lewiston. They live almost all of their married years at 25 Acadia Ave., Lewiston. They had just moved to Marcotte Home one month ago. With the move, he had received a wheelchair scooter. He had a very difficult time with walking for many years. The scooter allowed him to attend mass at the Marcotte Home chapel which meant a great deal to him.

He worked for 37 years at Country Kitchen, driving a delivery truck. During those years he drove through many Maine towns where he met many people. Many customers looked forward to seeing him everyday. He was a man who always had a joke and a quick smile for everyone.

After 16 years of marriage, he became the father to his only child, Paul. He truly was a wonderful father who found much joy and pride in watching Paul’s accomplishments over the years. He was on the Boy Scout Council while Paul was in Scouts.

He spent many years as a member and officer of the Montagnard Social Club. He was on their volleyball team and was a snowshoer. He had a deep passion for life, enjoying hunting and fishing. Many of his best vacations were taken at a camp on Androsscogin lake with his wife, brother, and sister-in-law, Normand and Lorraine Fouquette. Many of his special nieces and nephews would spend time there playing cards, fishing, and making memories that would last forever.

In 1987, his first grandchild Daniel was born. The joy in his eyes when he held him will always be remembered. His second grandchild, Angela, was born in 1991. With their births, you often heard him say “I’ve had a good life.”

As the years progressed, his health declined. In January of this year, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. When asked how he was doing, he always remained positive with his usual answer being “terrific.” He will be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father, brother, and friend. He will be in our hearts and memories forever.

He is survived by his wife, Rolande, his son, Paul, and daughter-in-law, Terry, of New Gloucester; his grandchildren, Dan and Angie Fouquette, also of New Gloucester; his brother, Arthur and sister-in-law, Georgette Fouquette, of Litchfield; his brother, Normand and sister-in-law, Lorraine Fouquette, of Windsor Locks, Conn.; his sister, Constance and brother-in-law, Leroy Boulanger, of New Mexico; his brother-in-law, Gaeton Breton, of Durham, Conn.; and another brother-in-law, Brother Joseph Gagne, of New Hampshire; and many nieces and nephews.
