LIVERMORE FALLS – The ground attack utilized by Livermore Falls certainly isn’t fancy, but it gets the job done.
Senior Brad Bryant proved to be unstoppable by rushing for 243 yards and three touchdowns as Livermore Falls overwhelmed Old Orchard Beach 26-7 at Griffen Field.
The Andies held a 13-7 lead at halftime.
Livermore Falls (2-0) extended the advantage to 19-7, creating some breathing room by marching 80 yards in 11 plays midway through the third quarter.
Bryant scored on a 9-yard touchdown run, shedding would-be tacklers.
Bryant had gained three straight first downs on runs of 13, 20 and 11 yards.
“I think our line was the difference tonight,” Livermore Falls coach Brad Bishop said. “Both teams had to overcome a rash of penalties and maintain their composure. We don’t do anything out of the ordinary, but the five-six plays, we do run them well.”
The line included tackles Milton Parlin, Tom Durrell, guards Mike Durrell, Tyler Cote and center Matt Brochu. The Andies ran counters and waggles, which caught the Seagulls in overpursuit.
The teams traded three touchdowns on three-consecutive possessions in the first half.
Bryant (134 yards in the half) opened the scoring with a 23-yard run. Cote added the PAT with 1:21 left in the first quarter.
“We didn’t attack any one area,” Bryant said. “I think our (misdirection) plays worked and, on defense, we were able to shut down their power game. We also contained their quarterback and he’s a heckuva of a athlete.”
Old Orchard Beach (0-2) answered when quarterback Mike Perrone (10 of 15 for 75 yards) threw a perfect pass to tight end Jesse Allen got past the secondary and hauled in a 36-yard touchdown pass. Dustin Bouchard booted the PAT to knot the score at 7-7.
Livermore Falls also received solid games by runners Ryan Webster (104 yards, 19 rushes) and Karlton Jones (43). OOB was held to 81 yards on 26 rushes, as Andies linebacker Tom Durrell sealed off the outside.
“We really felt in control in the second half,” Bryant said. “I thought that we controlled the tempo and our line was opening some huge holes.”
Bryant scored on a 28-yard run and Jones capped the scoring with a nine-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
