In light of the recent accident that occurred at the intersection of Russell and College streets, I am writing regarding the failure of the city of Lewiston to address safety issues on Russell Street.

Since the construction of the overpass, traffic on Russell Street has increased. It also appears that the majority of drivers do not adhere to the posted speed limit of 30 mph. The intersections at both Central Avenue and College Street are accidents waiting to happen.

Very few changes have been implemented to accommodate the increased traffic flow. Attempting a left turn from Russell Street at either intersection is treacherous. Very often, a driver has to go through a red light to make a left turn.

Perhaps the city should look at changing the traffic signals to create a left-turn lane when approaching the intersection or allow for a delayed signal. Perhaps Lewiston’s Selective Enforcement Team should monitor traffic in this area as part of their project to target speeders.

Hopefully, the city will not wait for a fatality to institute changes that were promised prior to the overpass project.
