I have been reading with interest the comments of Sun Journal readers concerning the tax cap arguments concerning Maine taxpayers.

It is my understanding that we are one of the highest taxed states, and lowest income in the country. Something has to give.

The current system cannot continue, in my opinion, because we are not getting ahead with things as they are. The increases in gasoline, fuel oil, insurance, medicines and taxes have become more than the average Mainer can tolerate.

I see threats of cuts to essential services, but no mention of cutbacks to legislation debt or spending that might be curtailed elsewhere if the tax cap passes. I see no alternative. Our legislators have no one to blame but themselves. We have been asking for tax relief for 20 years and have not received anything but talk. Talk is cheap, as they say, and does not pay the bills.
