During the Republican National Convention, Laura Bush and Education Secretary Rodney Paige bragged about the “success” of the No Child Left Behind Act. Laura Bush claims that NCLB “provides historic levels of funding.” Paige claims that “No Child Left Behind is working,” “teachers and principals are beaming with pride” and that it arms teachers with proper resources. He claims that schools that need assistance get assistance.”

If NCLB has been adequately funded, why do area schools use closets for classrooms? Why have Lewiston’s special education teachers been denied classroom supplies and Auburn had to eliminate 12 teaching positions? If teachers and principals are satisfied with NCLB, why are the National Teachers Association and the American Federation of Teachers endorsing John Kerry?

The Bush administration criticizes Kerry for not focusing on the future, but it is John Kerry who has a sensible plan for the future by funding education and helping schools meet standards.
