Each time the Olympics comes around, I hope that someone has taught our athletes how to respect our United States flag. They don’t. I was not able to watch them most of the time this year, but on the front page of the Sun Journal Aug. 27, there they were four of our athletes all wrapped up in flags, making me cringe. This is very disrespectful and against the U.S. flag code. Just because they are superior athletes does not mean that they have brains, and once again I’m hoping that before the Winter Olympics in 2006, someone will teach them better than to do this.
I guess, perhaps, I should not be surprised that they do not have better manners regarding our flag. Each Memorial Day when I march in the local parades, there are so many people on the sidelines who do not salute when the flag passes by. Why?
