NEWRY – Managing woodland for wildlife will be the focus of a Sept. 18 meeting sponsored by the Western Maine Chapter of the Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine.

Rob Bryan of Maine Audubon and SWOAM forester Paul Miller will lead the woods tour two miles north of the covered bridge on Sunday River Road.

The Saturday morning session begins with coffee and doughnuts at 8:30 a.m. and continues to about noon.

“Many woodland owners would like to know more about managing their land for wildlife,” Miller said. “No matter what we do out there we affect vegetation, change habitat and therefore increase or decrease our lands suitability for some species of wildlife.”

Bryan has put together ideas and facts that can help integrate timber and wildlife management objectives. Those attending the session are advised to bring pencils. For a small charge, a 90-page forest species book will be available.

More information may be obtained by calling Miller at 866-845-3047 or sending e-mail to [email protected]. All SWOAM meetings are open to the public.
