NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) – An explosion Monday aboard a lobster boat in Buzzard’s Bay left one person dead.

The Coast Guard responded to a call from another boater around 1:30 p.m. after he heard an explosion and saw the boat sink. The boater recovered one body from the water, Coast Guard spokeswoman Kelly Newlin said.

Newlin said it was not immediately known whether more people were on board, but officials believe the victim was alone.

The 24-foot boat, called the “Captain Tony,” exploded in the southern portion of Buzzard’s Bay. The cause of the explosion was under investigation.

The Coast Guard did not immediately release the identity of the victim because his family had not yet been notified.
