LEWISTON – A fire that apparently started when a stove burner was accidentally left on destroyed a house at 36 Elliott Ave. Monday morning, according to Fire Department Inspector Peter Morrell.

Firefighters responded to a 10:29 a.m. call from a neighbor reporting the sound of breaking glass at the house, he said. No one was home at the time.

On the scene, black and brown smoke poured steadily out of the windows and eaves of the two-story yellow house. Elliott Avenue is located one-tenth of a mile off Main Street in a quiet neighborhood.

Morrell said homeowners Jason and Janet Fuller were insured. He estimated damage at the value of the home, $100,000 to $150,000. The fire was contained to the kitchen and dining room, but smoke and heat destroyed other rooms in the house.

He said he believed the Fullers and their three children would be staying with relatives or neighbors.
