BRIDGTON – Bridgton Historical Society holds its annual Fall Harvest Festival on Saturday, Sept. 25, at Narrimissic Farm off Route 107 in South Bridgton.
One of the most popular events is the sheep dog demonstrations. Champion border collies will herd and gather sheep. Lynn Deschambeault of Denmark has won many events with her trained collies. She will explain how she and her dogs work together as a team and what all the whistles and signals mean. One can see the difference between a novice dog, an intermediate dog, and a master collie.
Also there will be a horse-drawn ride down the dirt lanes, tours of the 1790 farmhouse and activities reflecting life of that period.
Children can play games of long ago such as blind man’s bluff, bobbing for doughnuts, sack races.
There will be a weaving and spinning demonstration, carding and spinning.
Children can hunt for pumpkins in the pumpkin patch and carve and decorate them.
At the blacksmith and woodworking shop, the forge will be glowing and the bellows will be blowing as a blacksmith works with antique tools.
There will be guided scavenger hikes to Bear Trap Mountain to see the real bear trap. This is an activity for people ages 4 to 100.
Hot dogs, drinks and snacks will be available, along with apples and brownies.
Admission to day events is $5 per person, or $15 maximum for a family. Admission covers all events except snacks and a turkey supper served at 5 and 6 p.m. in the barn. The menu is roasted turkey, stuffing, gravy, corn, peas, squash, real mashed potatoes, homemade bread, coffee, punch and homemade pies. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children under 10; free for those under 2.
