OXFORD – The Oxford County Fair will be selling chances on a quilt made from squares submitted last year in a contest. The drawing will be held Saturday and the proceeds used to buy material for next year’s quilt contest.
The winner of last year’s quilt was Helena Stevens of Oxford. The theme was “cornucopia.” Fair goers are encouraged to vote on their favorite square submitted for this year’s contest. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. They will be on sale in the Expo 1 building during the fair.
Senior Shenanigan Day will be held Thursday. Included will be a hat contest for the largest, smallest, prettiest, holiday theme and best fair theme, which is “Celebration of Mother Earth.”
There will be bingo and prizes, the Razzle Dazzle Line Dancers at 11:30 a.m., lunch at noon and entertainment by the Lighthouse Jubilees at 1:30 p.m. Those who wish can dance and enter the dance contest. A senior frying pan throwing contest will be held at 2 p.m. behind the stage area for men and women. There will be cash prizes. Registration for Shenanigan Day will be at 10 a.m. Gate admission for ages 65 and older is $2. Nursing home groups enter for free.
On Saturday, the first Moose Calling Contest will be held at 3 p.m. at the stage area. Robert Redfud will provide some moose calling entertainment to get the audience in the mood. The audience will be the judge by their applause for each age group. Participants can do their moose calls by various means – with washtub, with a bow of rawhide, or simply vocal chords. The grand prize is a four-hour moose tour for four people provided by Mooseland Tours of Norway. Owner Brenda Marcotte will sponsor the event. In addition to the grand prize will be a first place trophy. More information may be obtained by calling Brenda at 743-8550.
Four-wheel-drive truck pulls will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday. Weigh-ins begin at 5 p.m. No entry fees will be charged for any of the events. More information may be obtained by calling Shawn Huston at 515-0010.
The 159th exhibition on Pottle Road will include a midway by Castlerock Shows. For $5 people can buy five ride tickets that are good for one ride each. Tickets must be purchased before the fair begins by calling Jeannie Whittemore at 743-6737.
On Thursday and Friday night, people can pay one price for all the rides they want from 3 p.m. to closing.
There is also a $10 admission ticket for all four days of the fair. The set of tickets may be purchased the same as the ride tickets, but must be bought before the fair starts also.
Regular admission will be $5 for those age 13 and older; $2 for those ages 4 to 12; free for ages 3 and under. The parking fee is $1.
Pari-mutuel harness racing has a post time of 3 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and 1 p.m. Saturday.
A grand drawing of $1,000 will be held Thursday at the stage from all admission tickets. The winner must have the matching ticket stub and be present to win.
